Unleash Your Inner Designer: Eclectic Home Decor Ideas

Are you tired of Millennial grey and quiet beige walls? It's time to inject some personality and fun into your home with this colourful, eclectic style! This design aesthetic celebrates individuality, mixing and matching patterns, textures, and colours into a fabulously unique home. But! There are a few tips that you should keep in mind so your colour explosion is unique, but also cohesive and appealing.

Embrace a Bold Colour Palette

This is the style where almost any colour in any combination goes! But before you go running to the paint store, take a minute. Find an inspiration piece first, whether it be an art print with gorgeous colours, a fabric pattern for a couch or wallpaper, anything that makes your heart sing. This will be your guiding piece; choose colours that compliment it. Choose any colour you want, and however many you desire! But your room will feel more inviting if the colours have a similar tone and having an inspiration piece will help immensely with the overwhelm of colour selection. Use the prints on the wall and cushions on the couch to really expand on the colour palette and have some fun.

Curate Unique Pieces

You really should have a statement piece in your room. Something that stopped you in your tracks and made you say 'yes. A thousand times yes!'.  Eclectic style looks fabulous with vintage pieces, and they can really make a statement! Try and find your statement piece first and then build the room around it; this will help the room feel more inviting than just thrown together. Found a glorious deep purple velour couch with brass feet? Excellent! Add some vintage brass frames to your gallery wall to tie it in. Maybe of the prints on the gallery that you picked up on your travels has some fuchsia in it, awesome! Throw a cushion on the couch with that colour, or a knick-knack on the coffee table. This style is great for mixing vintage, thrift store finds and modern decor all together, as long as you remember to stay within your colour scheme to tie it all together.

Mix and Match Patterns

My Nonna firmly told me that a lady never mixed patterns, despite what Vogue magazine said (and yes, I did reference my sources in my argument that it's okay to mix them, but not even Vogue swayed her). But I am here to say patterns are your friends! Mix and match to your heart content, this is not the style where stipes and spots can't be seen together. Florals, geometric, animal prints, if it goes with your inspiration colours and makes you happy, add it to the mix! A trick for combining different patterns is to experiment with the scale of the pattern. Have some large patterns, some small. This will create a more dynamic look, just what this style is after.

Layer Textures

This is the part that makes me so happy! Layer it up, cushions, floor rugs, throws (and what do you know? I make all those here!) Just as you mixed patterns, mix all your textures. Jute floor mat, velvet cushions, leather couch, mink quilts, glass coffee table, lace curtains... there really is no limit on how many textures you can add. It will add depth, and a truly wonderful tactile experience. Also, consider layering your lighting. Funky overhead lights, vintage lamps, candles, it will all create a delicious and soothing vibe.

The Last Touches

Last but not least, the finishing touches. Display all the little items you have collected in your travels and picked up along the way. Fill the place with plants if they make you happy, or fake plants if you're like me and can't keep them alive and the site of dead plant corpses sitting in cute pots depresses you. Fill your walls with artwork, and maybe try to create some of your own. The eclectic home style is incredibly personable, so fill it with all the awesomeness of you and make it your own.

Conclusion

Remember, the key to eclectic decor is to have fun! This is a chance to express your individuality, don't be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. Your home should be a reflection of your unique style, personality and be full of the things that brings you joy, even if they don't match ;) So, unleash your inner designer and create a space that you love x
